Thirty inches of rain, which amounts to almost half the yearly expected rainfall, inundated Hobe Sound over a 10-day period in early June 2020. The Hobe Heights community was hit the hardest. With the water table at capacity, it is taking longer for flood water to recede.
Martin County's public works first called Hinterland Group on June 5th 2020 at 10:00pm to help aid in pumping the flood water from the impacted areas in Martin County. Hinterland Group worked over 30 hours straight to get pumps setup and going. Over the course of time from June 5th to June 17th Hinterland’s emergency response team had six 6” pumps and two 8” pumps throughout Martin County neighborhoods with over 4000’ of hoses spread out at each pump to help discharge the water away from the residence homes. The Hobe Heights neighborhood was impacted the most with dozens of homes damaged by the rainfall and even some mailboxes were nearly under water on particular streets. Hinterland was instructed to have Three of our pumps setup in the Hobe heights neighborhood. Hinterland and Martin County staff placed these pumps in certain areas to drain each street as quickly as possible. These pumps ran 24 hours a day for 10 days straight with each pump pumping aprox. 3,000 gpm. Hinterland staff was on standby and had personnel on site each day and night checking fuel levels, oil levels, hose connections and hose condition for each pump. Each pump was moved from one location to another as streets were pumped down and residents were happy. Emergency generator was also set on the electric pump to help pump down the flooded waters out of the residentials streets and into a temporary drainage ditch at 5,000 gpm. With the assistance of many of Hinterland employees a lot of Martin County residents avoided any flood damage to their homes and were able to safely travel throughout their town.
Within the first 48 hours, the flood waters were reduced by 40%, and residents were able to safely use the neighborhood roads that looked like canals just days before! The Hinterland team was able to save Martin County time and money with their fast response and availability to their pump inventory and hoses in stock at our warehouse. Hinterlands Fleet department is always ensuring that our equipment is properly maintained and ready to go. Being prepared and organized with our equipment and inventory is one of Hinterlands prides as you never know when an issue may arise!
